An end of the 16th - early 17th-century German Rhenish salt-glazed stoneware Bellarmine jug (Bartmannkrug), Frechen or Cologne.
Of a globular form, with a long narrow tapering neck. The neck is decorated with a particularly well-defined and naturalistic bearded mask. The rounded body is ornamented with three applied circular medallions, each depicting a stylised sunburst with a lion or human face at its centre, enclosed within a raised circular border.
A handsome example of early Rhenish stoneware, distinguished by its expressive bearded mask, repeating sunburst decoration and attractive variation in glaze colour.
Origin: Frechen or Cologne, Germany
Date: Circa 1600
Condition: Restoration around the top of the neck and to the handle. Slight firing collapse to the shoulder where another vessel has knocked it in the kiln.
