A very rare example of a Bellarmine (Bartmann) bottle produced in Raeren, illustrating a clear departure from the wares of Frechen and Cologne. Unlike earlier examples with incised, angular “pointed-nose” masks, Raeren bottles of this period are distinguished by their applied, carefully modelled faces of notable character and depth.
These masks are often finely detailed, featuring elaborately braided beards—occasionally incorporating a smaller, subsidiary face within the beard itself. Such craftsmanship reflects the high level of skill achieved by Raeren potters in the mid–16th century.
Aside from the prominent bearded mask, the vessel remains otherwise undecorated, conforming to the typical Raeren form of the period.
A label to the underside reads “Raeren 1570”, though this date could be slightly on the early side.
