A good example of a Raeren stoneware armorial jug (Wappenkrug), dating to circa 1580, with a very rare combination of medallions.

The body is applied with three distinct medallions, each bearing a different and seemingly unrelated coat of arms:

  1. An unusual coat of arms for an unknown knight, Antonio Bertone de Roddo, featuring a castle, cross pattée, and an eagle between towers. The inscription reads, "ANTONIO BERTONE DE RODDOBIO EQVES". Gaimster notes that this person cannot be historically traced in either Italy or the Netherlands. Ralph Mennicken speculates he was a member of the Spanish occupation force under the Duke of Alba during his rule of the Southern Netherlands. Kohnemann illustrates this medallion in his book.
  2. The coat of arms for the Henot family of Aachen.
  3. The coat of arms for Peter von Schwarzenberg and Margareta Krümmel von Nechtersheim. PSMK - Interestingly this medallion has mistakenly been applied upside down.

The presence of multiple heraldic devices possibly suggests a piece of commemorative or diplomatic significance, possibly marking alliances, familial connections, or broader social networks within the European elite.

Raeren, in present-day Belgium, was one of the leading centres of stoneware manufacture in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, renowned for its robust forms and sophisticated decorative schemes. This example, with its unusual combination of armorials, stands as a particularly compelling and historically resonant example of the Wappenkrug tradition.
