An interesting 17th-century German salt-glazed stoneware Bellarmine bottle (Bartmannkrug), Frechen or Cologne in the Rhineland, circa 1600–1650.
Of typical form, with a reddish-brown glaze and an unusual medallion depicting a lion above a crescent moon with a human face, surmounted by a crown and enclosed within an ornamental border. The combination of these motifs gives the medallion a particularly intriguing heraldic character.
Condition: Restored around the neck & handle. Small firing splits and other imperfections. Please check photos carefully.
