A Miniature Berlin Porcelain Moulded Teapot and Cover, circa 1765

A charming small Berlin porcelain teapot of compressed baluster form, the body moulded with radiating foliate motifs and finely painted in polychrome enamels with scattered sprays and bouquets of flowers.

The teapot is applied with a naturalistically modelled branch-form handle, enriched in brown and green, and an unusually distinctive anthropomorphic spout modelled with a female mask beneath the elongated fluted neck. Further applied leafy branches decorate the handle terminals.

The associated domed cover is similarly moulded and painted with small flower sprigs, surmounted by a yellow flower-head finial. Painted initials “C.A.” to the underside of the teapot; the cover bearing a blue sceptre mark for the Berlin (KPM) factory.

Condition: The spout has been restored above the mask. Small chips and losses to the flower finial. The cover sits slightly small and may be an associated period replacement rather than the original cover. Minor age-related wear consistent with an 18th-century porcelain piece.

Berlin porcelain teapots occasionally feature elaborately moulded spouts terminating in, or emerging from, a human mask. Such sculptural details reflect the Rococo taste for playful and fantastical ornament, combining naturalistic branch handles, relief-moulded bodies and painted floral decoration with whimsical figural elements. The mask-form spout is a particularly distinctive feature of Berlin factory production from this period.
