Mid 16th Century Bellarmine Bottle, German Salt Glaze Stoneware - Frechen
An attractive mid 16th century bellarmine bottle - Frechen, Germany. With motto inscribed around its belly, renaissance portrait medallions and acanthus leaves running above and below the inscription. A characterful face typical for jugs of this early period from Frechen rather than Cologne. Third quarter of the 16th century.
21cm
A very rare jug, but sadly with faults, including extensive restoration work. A significant portion of the right, front and back side of the vessel has been recreated. With further over colouring where it has been blended with the original portion. Some large 'cracks' / movement in the plaster which are visible. Neck, face, handle, and foot are original, as well as most of the left side. Chip to the foot. Please check over the photos carefully.
