A very finely made Derby figure circa 1775-1785. Realistically modelled by Pierre Stephan, this figure touchingly depicts a weeping Andromache leaning over an urn containing the ashes of the Greek hero Hector (the son of King Priam of Troy, featured in 'Homers' Iliad). Richly decorated in an array of colours, embellished in gilt. Said to be inspired by the contemporary painting by Thomas Burke, of which Stephan is known to have purchased a print.

This figure is illustrated p251 in ‘Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848’ by Peter Bradshaw.

Both the British Museum & Fitz William hold this figure in their collections - you can find more detailed information from their websites.

23.5cm high

Condition: A wonderful piece, but sadly with some faults: A fine hairline running partway around the torso, from the urn outward - very hard to see and possibly retouched. Imperfections/chips to the corners of the pedestals & the base of the urn. Further manufacturing flaws to the reverse of the urn base, including a chip which was glazed over. Some chips/losses to the garland. Areas of imperfection in the finish. The base has also been broken off and restuck, which is mostly prominent on the right side (base of dress) where there are a few chips along the break line. Please make sure to see the photos carefully.
