A large and highly impressive Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre octagonal bowl, circa 1920, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881-1945) at the height of her imaginative powers.

The interior is richly decorated with the celebrated Woodland Elves VIII: Boxing Match pattern, a wonderfully animated and whimsical scene in which finely detailed elves spar beneath fantastical trees, enlivened by jewel-like enamels and iridescent lustre tones that shift beautifully in the light. The octagonal form provides an architectural framework for the design, enhancing both its theatricality and depth.

The exterior is adorned with the Castle on a Road pattern, enclosed within a finely gilt cobbled frame border, the gilding providing a striking contrast to the glowing lustre ground. The interplay between the vibrant interior scene and the more structured, romantic exterior decoration exemplifies Makeig-Jones’ genius for combining fantasy with refined design discipline.

Bold in scale and exceptional in presence, this bowl represents one of the most desirable expressions of the Fairyland Lustre range — a tour de force of early twentieth-century ceramic artistry and a true statement piece for the discerning collector.
