A charming and well-modelled pair of Staffordshire pearlware figures depicting the popular companion subjects of A Sailor's Farewell and A Sailor's Return, each raised on a brown-lined rectangular base with canted corners. Richly coloured and full of narrative appeal, the figures capture the emotional themes of separation and reunion that resonated deeply in Britain's great age of naval power.

These companion groups were among the most enduring and successful subjects produced by the Staffordshire potteries during the early nineteenth century. Reflecting the importance of maritime life to Georgian society, they celebrate both the sacrifices of sailors and the joy of homecoming, embodying the sentiment and storytelling that characterise the finest Staffordshire figure production.

With their expressive modelling, attractive pearlware glaze and strong decorative presence, this pair represents a classic example of early Staffordshire pottery at its most engaging and evocative.

Height: 23 cm

Condition: Losses to the tree on both. Areas of restorative touch up and small filled chips. Glaze chips and shallow chips to the base. One hat brimmed re-stuck.
