A Raeren stoneware armorial jug (Wappenkrug), dating to circa 1600, exemplifying the high level of craftsmanship and ceremonial function achieved in late 16th and early 17th century Rhineland production.
The baluster-form body is applied with three repeating circular medallions, each bearing the coat-of-arms of Peter von Schwarzenberg and Margareta Krümmel von Nechtersheim. These heraldic devices are one of the more commonly found on Raeren stoneware, with this particular jug being a rare example framed by a matrimonial inscription, commemorating the union and underscoring the vessel’s role as a commemorative or presentation piece. Although this example is mis-fired and only part of the full inscription is visible, it should have read as follows, "PETER:SVARTZENBURCH:UNDE:MARGRET:VAN:NECHTRSEM:G:K:SIN:HUSVRAU:"
This example stands as a fine representation of the Wappenkrug type, combining heraldic significance with the enduring strength and aesthetic appeal of Rhineland stoneware.
