A 17th century German Bellarmine (Bartmann) stoneware jug with a very rare 'devil's mask' face. The unusually crisp expressive face sporting devils horns and baring a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth. The medallion featuring a rampant lion shield set within a cartouche with floral motifs.
17th century, Frechen
21cm
Condition: Kiln marks / debris and mis-shapen aspects. The left side of the bottle has been broken and restored with some areas of addition localised along the break edge - most notably through the medallion.
