An exceptional Yuan Jun Yao glazed tripod censor in the Chinese Song Dynasty style with a copper red splash. The thick glaze richly coloured in subtle variations of greens and blues. 

Attributed to Shoji Hamada for Leach Pottery, St Ives 1920-1922. 

It is known Hamada made in excess of 10,000 experiments with Chinese style glazes. Being unmarked, it is probable this in a continuation of his work experimental work in Japan prior to settling into the new forms and glazed he discovered in Cornwall. Several of these St Ives Jun Ware pieces are known: a pedestal cup with the Janet Leach collection, one in the Tsuji Kinichiro collection (illustrated in The English Arts and Crafts Movement and Hamada Shoji), and one sold with Christie's, South Kensignton, 2nd July 1997, Lot 37.

Condition: Overall good. Possible very short hairline on the lip (see last photo). Some surface wear/scratching.
